Sandra M Gilbert
The late author, poet and Distinguished Professor of English Sandra Gilbert received the 2013 National Book Critics Circle Award, with longtime colleague Dr. Susan Gubar of Indiana University. The pair co-wrote the groundbreaking work of feminist theory Madwoman in the Attic: The Woman Writer and the Nineteenth-Century Literary Imagination (1979), described as “a nuanced study of the tenuous position of women writers and women characters within a patriarchal culture," and No Man’s Land: The Place of the Woman Writer in the Twentieth Century, a three-volume work (1989-94).
