Academic Worklife Program Requests

ACTIVE SERVICE MODIFIED DUTY, REPLACEMENT TEACHING FUNDS, AND EXTENSIONS ON THE TENURE CLOCK

UC Davis recognizes the importance of supporting academic appointees in honoring their often-competing commitments to both family and career, especially when adding children to their lives. Whether through childbirth or placement for adoption or foster care, eligible appointees have options through UC policies and the UC Davis Academic Work Life Program for integrating family with work.

The Faculty Relations and Development team (email vpaa_frd@ucdavis.edu) should be contacted as soon as an academic appointee knows they want to explore any of the options below.

The forms below can be used to request extensions on the tenure clock and/or replacement teaching funds when an academic appointee is on leave or Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD). There is also an option below for those taking ASMD, but whose main responsibilities are non-teaching.

Please note: Effective Fall 2023, requests that are not completed ahead of the affected quarter/semester may not be approved by Academic Affairs. Requests are considered complete when they have been approved by all reviewers in the review process.

In order to choose the right form, please consider the following questions:

  1. Are you/Is the appointee pre- or post-tenure?
  2. Are you/Is the appointee planning to take a leave?
    (Please note that requests for leaves related to childbearing and childrearing must be submitted through MIV.)
  3. Are you/Is the appointee planning to take ASMD? If so, are replacement teaching funds needed, or are their responsibilities mainly non-teaching and need of some other form of reduction?

REQUEST FOR CLOCK EXTENSION ONLY

Choose this form if:

  • you are pre-tenure
  • you are requesting an extension due to:
    • Childbearing/childrearing and you are not taking a leave or Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD)
    • A serious health condition, including disability, bereavement and COVID-related reasons
    • A significant circumstance or event, including COVID-related reasons

REQUEST FOR CLOCK EXTENSION AND REPLACEMENT TEACHING FUNDS (WITH LEAVE)

Choose this form if:

  • you are pre-tenure, and
  • you are taking a leave,
  • whether or not you are taking Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD).

Generally, this form applies to someone pre-tenure who is having a baby or adopting/fostering a child.

REQUEST FOR CLOCK EXTENSION AND REPLACEMENT TEACHING FUNDS (WITHOUT LEAVE)

Choose this form if:

  • you are pre-tenure, and
  • you are taking Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD), but
  • you are not taking a leave.

Generally, this option applies to someone pre-tenure whose partner is having a baby.

REQUEST FOR REPLACEMENT TEACHING FUNDS ONLY (WITHOUT A CLOCK EXTENSION)

Choose this form if:

  • you already have tenure, or
  • you have already extended the clock to the maximum amount allowed, and
  • you are taking a leave and/or Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD).

Generally, this form applies to someone with tenure -- or who has already extended the clock to the maximum amount allowed -- who is having a baby or adopting/fostering a child or whose partner is having a baby or adopting/fostering a child.

ACTIVE SERVICE MODIFIED DUTY (NO REPLACEMENT TEACHING FUNDS REQUESTED)

Choose this form if:

  • you are taking Active Service Modified Duty (ASMD), and
  • your responsibilities are mainly non-teaching.

Generally, this form applies to someone with primarily clinical, research, or continuing education responsibilities.
