Strength through Equity & Diversity (STEAD) Faculty Search Committee Workshops

What is STEAD?

The STEAD Committee is made up of trained UC Davis faculty members who provide information and advice about practices for achieving excellence, equity, and diversity in faculty recruitment at the University of California, Davis. The committee leads workshops for faculty and administrators involved in hiring. The STEAD workshop aims to identify factors that can introduce bias into the faculty recruitment process and to provide evidence-based approaches that will maximize the likelihood that excellent and diverse scholars will be identified, selected for offers and recruited onto the UC Davis faculty.

Required STEAD-certification for Members of Faculty Recruitment Committees:

All members of faculty search committees must complete STEAD certification (on Davis campus), or Enhanced Training for Faculty Search Committee Members (on Sacramento campus), before the evaluation of applicants ends. Non-UCD members and graduate students of a search committee must also be certified.  Completion of this workshop must be done once every three (3) years.

Why do I need to retake STEAD certification?

Because our experience with and understanding of faculty hiring is continually evolving, faculty who wish to serve on recruitment committees are required to renew their STEAD certification every three years.  The content of the STEAD sessions adapts and evolves as well, and the faculty who develop this curriculum for our campus community meet each year to reimagine and restructure their sessions to incorporate new knowledge and research, and use that information as appropriate to be relevant to contemporary recruitments.

When does STEAD certification expire?

STEAD certification expires after three academic years. For example, a faculty member who participated in STEAD or Enhanced Training for Faculty Search Committee Members on any date during the 2021-2022 academic year will retain certification through June 30, 2025.
