Department Chairs Bag Lunch Series

Bag lunch sessions for department chairs focus on a variety of topics intended to support chairs in their roles as leaders of academic departments. Many of the sessions are led by experienced chairs or other campus administrators with specific experience or expertise in that topic. Session topics are determined by chairs in addition to relevant updates in Academic Affairs.

2017 Two-Day Mandatory New Chairs Workshop

Academic Affairs offers a two-day, mandatory session for newly appointed department chairs and directors. This training is typically held immediately before the start of Fall Quarter each academic year. The goal of the workshop is to provide chairs with key information and resources to assist them in their new roles. The session also allows chairs and directors the opportunity to interact with counterparts in other departments and programs. Vice Chairs and returning chairs are also welcome to attend to share their experiences and perspectives to the dialogue. Each year Academic Affairs updates this workshop to make it as useful and practical for the chairs and vice chairs in attendance. A complimentary continental breakfast and catered lunch are provided.

Session Topics Include:

  • Procedures for faculty advancement
  • Managing department resources
  • Financial management
  • Facilitating faculty success - faculty searches, nurturing new faculty
  • Important policies/procedures
  • Creating a productive work environment for faculty and staff
